Parents Evening Proves to be a Huge Success!
MORE than 120 parents from across Yeovil have attended a parents evening to find out more about the options available to their children when they leave school.
The evening, organised by Careers Information, Advice and Guidance Service Connexions Somerset Ltd was aimed at parents of young people currently in Year 10 who will be moving into their final GCSE year in September.
The event coincided with some schools’ work experience week and gave parents and young people alike the opportunity to discuss how they may turn the experience into a real a career move. Alternatively, for pupils who discovered that their work experience was not a career for them, it provided them with an opportunity to look at alternative options.
The focus of the evening was to provide information on the main options available to young people at 16 and beyond. These were – Further Education, Foundation Learning, Apprenticeships, Employment with Training and Higher Education.
One parent who attended the event said: “I found the event really informative and it is great to know that this type of support is available.
“I was able to get lots of information on the options available to my son when he finishes his GCSE’s and it was great to speak to experienced advisers who were really helpful and friendly.”
The event was targeted at Year 10 parents who will have children returning to school in September to start their final year at school and will have these important decisions to make. From Tuesday 28th July to September 1st, the Yeovil Connexions Centre, based at 30-40 Hendford, will remain open to 6.30pm every Tuesday.
Connexions Somerset Ltd Contracts and Operations Manager Angie Gray said: “ The event was really positive and the feedback was fantastic. The centre had a great energy and the majority of parents went away much clearer about the options open to their child.
“It is not always convenient for some parents and young people to come and see us during our normal opening hours.
“So we have extended our opening hours over the summer to give those who may find it difficult to visit our centre during normal opening hours to visit the centre if they wish.”
Connexions Somerset Ltd Careers and Skills advisers will be on hand to provide information advice and guidance to both adults and young people.
Angie Gray added: “It may be that a young person has just finished Year 11 and has not yet made a decision about what they would like to do in September or an adult looking for employment or wanting to speak to an adviser about a career change or the possibility of taking up a college course.
“Whatever the query our careers and skills advisers are on hand to help.”
