Somerset's Youth have their Shout!

Young people in the South Somerset area are having their shout about the county-wide teenage advisory service Connexions Somerset.

A youth panel of local teenagers has helped develop a new section of the organisation’s website under the banner “Your Shout”.

The section gives young people a chance to post comments on services run by Connexions and have an input into how the organisation is developed.

Connexions Somerset team leader Harriet Bell said today: “It’s a great opportunity for young people to get involved and have their say about what happens within the organisation. After all these are the people we are here to serve.”

The panel has been involved in designing the new web service and getting it up and running. It can be found on www.connexions-somerset.org.uk/yourshout.

Seventeen year old Jared Colclough is one of the panel’s members. He said: “I think it’s brilliant that Connexions take the time to listen to what the teenagers themselves want.”

This week (starting Feb 18) has been designated by Connexions as “involvement week” when the organisation wants young people to come forward with ideas about how they want the service to develop in the future.

Connexions centres in Bridgwater, Minehead, Street, Taunton and Yeovil will be open to receive those ideas.

The young people have also been involved in helping to design the layout of new centres being opened by Connexions in Taunton and Bridgwater. The plan is to relocate to the new premises in West Quay, Bridgwater and High Street Taunton in the near future.

Harriet Bell added: “The young people have been involved in helping us to get the design of the reception areas right – so they are the kind of places young people want to visit and will feel comfortable in.”

And through the youth panel the organisation is also developing a mailing list of “consultants” who can be invited to get involved in projects as they develop during the year.
