A Robotic Challenge for Taunton Students
“Robot wars” will be breaking out in Taunton next week – as students from secondary schools in the town battle it out in a unique challenge, designed to raise interest in science and technology.
The Robotic Challenge will see the students designing and building robots from Lego and then programming them through a computer to obey individual commands!
Year 10 and 11 students from secondary schools across the town will be taking part in the challenge, which will be held at Ladymead School, Taunton, on Monday January 28.
The whole event has been organised by the Somerset Education Business Partnership as part of ‘Setpoint’, a government initiative to promote science, technology, engineering and maths in schools.
Sue John, Setpoint co-ordinator for the Somerset Education Business Partnership, said today: “It is a brilliant challenge which really stretches the students.
“First they have to build the robots – and this Lego very different from how parents remember it – then they have to programme their robot through laptop computers to perform a series of challenges.
“The technology employed here isn’t too dissimilar to that being used by the robot currently on the surface of Mars!”
One of the aims of the challenge is to encourage young people to consider technology-based careers and relevant local employers have been invited to support the challenge day.
Similar events are also being planned in other Somerset towns in the weeks to come.
Sue John added: “Our grand aim is to have a challenge final at the end of it all so we can crown the robot champions of Somerset!”
