McDiplomas - Why Not?

The Chief Executive of Connexions Somerset, Peter Renshaw, has welcomed moves which will see the fast food chain McDonalds offerings its own qualifications.

McDonalds – together with Flybe and Network Rail – has been given the right to offer qualifications by the government’s exam watchdog, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.

The pilot scheme will be aimed at the company’s 7,000 managers and will offer education “credits” which range from Level 2 (GCSE A to C grades) to Level 3 (equivalent to A level).

The idea has had a mixed reaction nationally but Mr Renshaw says it is to be broadly welcomed and he would like to see local McDonalds outlets across Somerset introducing the scheme as soon as possible.

Today he said: “Why not McDonalds? We welcome all employers showing a commitment to lifelong learning and I think it can only be of benefit to people working for the company.

“There is some debate about how transferable a McDonalds qualification might be to other companies and in an ideal world we would like to see them NVQ based.

“But the bottom line is that this is a company which is trying to engage its staff in continual learning and that has to be welcomed.”
