Magnificent seven make the last eight!
A FIVE aside football team from Somerset successfully beat competition from across the country to make it to the quarter finals of a national football competition.
The team, made up of employees of countywide young people’s information, advice and guidance service Connexions Somerset travelled to Keepmoat Stadium – home of Doncaster Rovers to take part in the tournament.
The competition has been running for the last ten years and is open to Connexions services across England and careers services from the rest of the UK.
This year the competition attracted over 30 entries the majority of which were from the North and the Midlands.
Connexions Somerset has entered the competition on several previous occasions but as one of the smallest services in England its previous record has been undistinguished.
Team Captain Richard Jones said: “We are not the most youthful of squads and were carrying a number of injuries.
“Our target was to win two games of six but we actually won four and drew two of six group games scoring 19 goals against teams such as Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham in the process.
“This meant that much to our surprise we qualified for the quarter finals as group winners. “
The team also secured victories against The Black Country, Herefordshire and Merseyside before being pushed out of the competition in the quarter finals by Connexions Bradford.
The team would like to thank Martock FC for loaning them their kit to take part in the competition.
Team captain, Richard Jones added: “We were absolutely delighted to win our group and make the last eight.
“We made our presence felt in our first game and never looked back. It was especially pleasing to beat much bigger services like Merseyside and the Black Country”.
