A Timely Warning to Somerset Employers
Employers in Somerset are being warned: “If you’re thinking of employing school leavers – act now!”
Connexions Somerset, the county-wide young people’s advisory service, says employers often leave it too late to recruit new labour.
Chief Executive Rachel Bendall said: “There is often a perception among employers that it is best to wait until GCSE and A-level results are published before they think about recruitment.
“The problem is by then most young people have already made their decisions and employers can miss out on a rich vein of talent.”
For many young people now is the time when they are thinking about whether to stay on in education – perhaps A-levels or University courses – or go straight into employment.
And for employers that means that NOW is the time to be looking out for the best potential employees.
Employers are being advised to engage with potential new recruits now – talk to them and explain what is on offer.
Connexions Somerset offers a free vacancy handling service to employers and can also help to match young people to specific occupations and vacancies. Job vacancies can be displayed on its website www.connexions-somerset.org.uk. Connexions can also act as an advocate between young people, training providers and employers, providing information on things like apprenticeship programmes.
Rachel added: “That is quite important because the way apprenticeships operate and the costs to employers have changed and we can provide up to date information for employers to consider.”
“The other thing we say to employers is don’t just restrict your search to school leavers. There will be some very talented college leavers, including A-level students, coming into the market place as well – and not all of them will want to go on to university.”
Employers, or young people, wanting to know more can contact any of the six Connexions centres in Taunton, Bridgwater, Minehead, Frome, Street and Yeovil or log on to the website at www.connexions-somerset.org.uk
