A brief guide to benefits

Rules and regulations governing benefits can be complicated and depend on individual circumstances.

Under 18?

You may be entitled to financial help if:

 bullet pointyou want to work, but you need support while you look for work
 bullet pointyou want to train to increase the chances of getting the work you want, but you need financial help to make it happen
 bullet pointyou can't work, so you need support for day-to-day living.


If you are unemployed you may be entitled to claim Job Seekers Allowance (JSA).

For advice contact your local Connexions centre or the under 18s adviser at your local Jobcentre Plus office www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk.

18 or over?

If you are over 18 and work for less than 16 hours a week, you may be entitled to claim Job Seekers Allowance (JSA).

There are other benefits you may be entitled to if you are on low earnings, disabled, sick or have a family.

Housing and council benefit

If you rent your own accommodation you will have to pay rent and council tax.

If you are living in your own place - on a low wage or state benefit – you may have help towards these costs through housing and council tax benefit.

In some cases you may be able to claim all of your rent and council tax.

Crisis loans

If you are claiming benefit - and have no money - it may be worth applying for a crisis loan. These are given in times of crisis such as:

 bullet pointyou have no money for food
 bullet pointyou need bedding
 bullet pointyour money has been stolen

All crisis loans have to be repaid and will be deducted from your benefit. For advice contact your local JobcentrePlus office www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk (or see YOUR TOWN/AREA on this site for addresses).

Child benefit

Child Benefit is paid to the parents or guardians of young people (up to age 20) who are in full-time (non-advanced) education or learning through a government-supported training scheme.

Help for care leavers

If you are in care - or left care after October 2001 - you may be entitled to a leaving care service. Speak to your social worker or contact your local social services office.
